The 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress (PSIC-12) was held from 8–12 July 2013 at the Laucala campus of the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. The PSIC-12 was a highly successful meeting with excellent science, and was the third most well-attended Inter-Congress in PSA's history, attracting 632 registered participants from 51 countries. We congratulate our hosts at the University of the South Pacific for organizing this very successful meeting, and thank them for their hard work, generosity, and hospitality.The theme of the 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress was: “Science for Human Security & Sustainable Development in the Pacific Islands and Rim”. The PSIC-12 included physical, biological, and social sciences and encompassed terrestrial, marine, atmospheric, and social/cultural subjects and approaches in the Pacific Islands and Rim region. Summary Report on the 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress
The 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress was opened on 8 July 2013 by the President of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, who addressed the participants during the Opening Ceremony. Following welcome remarks by USP Vice-Chancellor and President Prof. Rajesh Chandra and by PSA President Dr. Nancy Lewis were three Plenary Addresses. Prof. Kiyoshi Kurokawa from the National Graduate Research Institute for Policy Studies (Japan) gave a talk on “Global Change, Human Security, and Sustainable Development in the Asia-Pacific”. Dr. Nordin Hasan from the International Council for Science (ICSU) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific introduced Future Earth, the new ten year international research initiative. His Excellency Anote Tong, President of the Republic of Kiribati, was unable to attend in person but gave a videotaped address on “Climate Change and Human Security in the Pacific Islands”.
Keynote Speakers at the PSIC-12 included addresses from the following distinguished scholars: Prof. Prof. Hurriyet Babacan from the University of New England, Mr. Walter Echo-Hawk from Crowe and Dunleavy and member of the Pawnee Nation, Ms. Judith Francis from Science and Technology Policy Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation, Prof. Elisabeth Holland from the University of the South Pacific, Prof. Abtar Kaur from the Open University of Malaysia, Prof. Richard Kenchington from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security at the University of Wollongong, and Prof. Dr. Dieter Mueller-Dombois from the University of Hawaii - Manoa.
The 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress included 332 papers and presentations in the seven sub-theme sessions and twenty special events. Special events included special sessions, panels, special symposia, workshops, webinars, and side events on:
